Posters can be wonderful expressions of artistic design or a powerful advertising tool.
If advertising is the main purpose, then there are some simple rules you can follow to make them work optimally for you. Too often, posters are poorly designed because there is simply too much information. Some people feel that since they are working with a larger than normal area, they can write a novel in the space available. Not the best idea.

The 7 second rule.

People can more easily remember and absorb 7 words. More than that and you temp making it less memorable. That's why we do better with phone numbers than our charge card numbers.

Bearing this in mind, you want to incorporate these tips into your poster design.
(Let's preface this by saying that in some circumstances like an office or elevator, where you might have a captive audience, the 7 second rule does not matter)

1. Keep your headline short - Try and keep it to 7 words and as the largest font size.

2. Use an image that dominates and make sure it conveys the purpose of your poster. Limit the number of images. You don't want them fighting for the attention of your potential customer's eye.

3. Limit the number of fonts to use. Use the font sizes appropriately to make the headline stand out the most.

4. Let your advertising posters b r e a t h e.
More space makes them easier to read. Leave text clutter for tabloid magazines. You can always direct your audience to your website where the details and other stuff can go and serve your customer best.

5. Make colour work for you but don't have so much colour that there is a fight going on for importance of information. Remember, the headline and image should say it all, and measure the dose of colours appropriately.

Place your posters strategically in the highest traffic areas. Sounds like a simple plan, but you'll be surprised how often the obvious can escape us.
