Package Design

In the battle for consumer dollars, stores rely on many clever ways to get people to part with their money.

Store design and layout, product placement and visual aids are just a few of the elements involved in making a purchase as inviting as possible.

But when it comes to moving products off the shelf, the gold star goes to package design.

The product itself may be less than desirable, but chances are the package design is what often sways the consumer one way or the other.

Great package design stands out from everything else. You can be at the other end of the store and a well crafted packaging design can lure you in.

The KEY TIPS to remember when designing a package include:

1. Doing Your Homework

Visit different stores and check out the competition. See what efforts they have put into their package design and do it better!

2. Let Your Package Design Breathe

The image(s) are key in packaging, but too often they are cramped in with too much text or other images. Pick one great image and give it space to stand out.

3. Talk To The Consumer

Your headline is your salesman. If you don't introduce yourself, you won't be approached. Your headline should be clearly seen, short, simple and offer a benefit. Hard to do in a few words and limited space. That is why professional package designers are worth their weight in gold. At Canadian Printing Brokers, we offer seasoned graphic design consultants who can help you design or advise you.

4. Color Me Exciting

Colours are highly important to attracting your target market. From the day we are born we are drawn to certain colours, warned by others, frightened, excited, energized and more. Just ask a child to pick between a black balloon or coloured one. Colour makes the difference in influencing that decision.

So it is with packaging. Trying to appeal to women? You'll have the more elegant pastel shades work in your favour. Want men to give a look-touch? Splash the bright reds and yellows. (there are exceptions, and a qualified graphic designer can make that determination)

5. Pick Me

This is what your packaging design should say. But then what? Vital to having your product make it from the shelf to the cart, is the benefit. The consumer must know quickly and in very short terms what's in it for them. What will the product do, fix, improve, save etc.
